That's probably the most complicated valentine I've ever received but I think I figured it out. Happy valentine's day to you too.

MORAN is obviously smarter than I am. Can somebody please explain this year's valentine to me?

No one shows greater love than when he lays down his life for his friends.

David, nobody else has explained your valentine to me so will you do it? You did it last year.

Yes, what intricate explanation is there for this love card? Is it your work this year?

StimmeDesHerzens-- if you encounter something strange and wild, and you're not exactly sure how to categorize it, don't stop and ask too many questions. Don't feel you must fully understand it before you proceed further. Listen to the moon and stars, who tell you it is OK to leave the meaning unresolved for a while.

MORAN and jsl--Last year some readers thought my valentine was too sappy. This year I made one a few notches closer to the oblique side of the spectrum. (I'll bet "roses are red, violets are blue..." is starting to look pretty good right about now, huh?)

Even if we're lucky, sometimes the closest we'll come to seeing what love looks like is a quick glimpse of something caught unexpectedly in the headlights before it vanishes. Not enough for full diagnostic purposes but enough to confirm that there is, indeed, something out there in the dark.

Its not that i must fully understand, its that i like to understand...
It speaks of something mysterious going on, not of love. Last years card was not sappy.

StimmeDes Herzens-- I believe, like Matisse, that artists should have their tongues cut out so they won't start explaining their work. But I seem to have created a misimpression with my previous response to you and I must correct it. By something "strange and wild" that we should not investigate too closely, I wasn't referring to my little drawing.

My point was that cupid may not come to us looking like a beautiful cherub in a traditional Victorian Valentine. Love can be weird and irrational and ungainly and very different from what we ever expected. It might be a duck billed platypus with a magical wand, or a funny looking creature on roller skates wearing boxer shorts with hearts on them and carrying an inflatable pool toy in the middle of the desert. You are not allowed to see love on demand by going to a love museum or a love store. You can't inspect it in a display case and then choose the brand you want. Instead, when you least expect it, you may catch a brief glimpse of it darting across a road in a place where you thought you were all alone. if we do encounter something which might be love but then again might not, your friend Thomas Mann would urge that it is OK if we don't understand it at first, that it is OK to leave its full meaning unresolved while we explore the feelings it creates. I tend to agree with him.

Don't get hung up!

How can an artist not be a fool for a pretty face?

Somethings can only be learned the hard way!

अर्जुन-- If I was ever uncertain about sharing my valentine, Chubby Checker's "psychedelic album" urging that we not get "hung up in the love tunnel" has definitely cured me.

If my hero Chubby isn't ashamed to look like a buffoon in the name of love, why should I?

Hi David,

I've been too busy to "chat" ,lately, but had to stop a second and say I really liked this one. My absolute favorite among your valentines.

>Love can be weird and irrational and >ungainly and very different from >what we ever expected.

So true.

Cheers,
A.
